Since I’ve Been Gone: The Offbeat Empire Reception

Ok, so it’s been wayyyy to long since I’ve blogged. I know I’m sorry. But life happens fast and I’ve been way to busy lately to spend time on the internets. But I miss it! So one of my new year’s resolutions is to blog more. So here we go.

Seattle. Geek Girl Con. Offbeat Empire Reception Party. I know this happened 1000 years ago by now. But it was to amazing to pass up. So let’s talk about this.

The Offbeat Empire gals

Geek girl con is an organization and convention celebrating the female geek. The Offbeat Empire gals were hosting a panel (and a party!!) so I tagged along with Megan.

The party was UH-MAZING! I mean there were appetizers, cupcakes, burlesque dancers, a photo-booth, Karaoke and the amazing Jonas Seaman documented the entire event. This dude is SUCH a good photographer he makes me want to throw in the towel and never take a photo again.

Obviously the party was the most important part of our weekend. So Megan and I spent a lot of time planning our outfits. A few days before we left I found a white lace dress at Urban Outfitters that I loved. However, once we actually got to Seattle I felt like my outfit was super boring. So Megan suggested I try wearing her new corset over the dress. I tried it on and BOOM. It looked amazing. Megan, my least fashion-minded, forward OR concerned friend totally styled me.

My favorite part of the night was the karaoke. Karaoke has recently become one of my favorite past times. I LOVE it. If I could I would be on stage all night (which may or may not have actually happened on my birthday this year.) So Garrett and I sang “Since U Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson.

But the absolute highlight of the night was when Megan belted out an awesome rendition of Cee Lo Green’s “F**k You.” Megan rocked it so HARD. The song was stuck in my head for the next two weeks. The offbeat empire gals and myself even got to be her back up dancers!

TheĀ GlitterĀ Sale

New Year's Eve Outfits

So there is this thing in Seattle that happens every November called The Glitter Sale. The glitter sale is a two-day event held by one of Seattle’s Goodwill stores. Every year they store all of the formal wear that gets donated and then they have a two-day sale. All of the proceeds go to their job training program.

This famous two-day sale features racks, rows and cases of glitzy and glamorous Goodwill bargains, all in one place. Quality merchandise is collected year-round for the big sale, including gowns, men’s formalwear, jewelry, shoes, purses and much more.

I learned about the Glitter Sale during my brief residence in Seattle in the fall of 2006. Now, it has become a tradition for me to visit Seattle every year during the sale. Last year 2009 was my fourth time going. I even brought my neighbors Megan (photographer and managing editor of OBB) and Aaron (sound engineer and shark attack victim!) It is my tradition to buy a sequin dress at the glitter sale every year, to wear on New Year’s Eve of that year.

Some of our fabulous finds:

This blue sequin dress was one of Megan’s finds. It later became her New Year’s Eve dress.

Megan also got a white rabbit fur coat. She said she had one just like it when she was little. Aaron found a brown suede jacket and and an entire three-piece suit!

I found a brown suede jacket featured on the Glitter Sale blog. It has a fur lined collar and sleeves. It is very Penny Lane-esque. I’m not going to lie I kind of feel like a badass in it. A homeless woman even stopped me on the street to tell me how “ill” I looked.

Christian Dior Tuxedo Jacket

There is even a great men’s section. One year (2007) Shea got this amazing Christian Dior Tuxedo Jacket for something ridiculously cheap like $30.

As previously mentioned, Aaron got an entire suit including a jacket, pants, and a white button down shirt for $60!

This last year Pemco Northwest even wrote about me on their blog!

“Those two weren’t the only Glitter Sale veterans in attendance. Courtney, a California native, has made the Glitter Sale a part of her holiday shopping for four years now. She plans her trips to the Northwest to coincide with the Glitter Sale because there’s no other event that combines shopping and giving in such a fun and stylish way. Courtney was in search of some jewelry and accessories to complement the mink fur coat she found at last year’s sale”.

Pemco Northwest

This is the Mink Fur coat that the Pemco guy speaks about. (I know I’m a vegan who wears fur). It was only $65!! How could I say no? Also, another picture of Shea in his Christian Dior Tuxedo Jacket.

I found this dress in 2007. It was a hand-beaded light pink cocktail dress. It even had shoulder pads! I wore it on New Year’s Eve 2007.

This is a hand made, vintage, strapless dress that Megan found. Sure, she doesn’t have an event to wear it to but it fit her like a glove!
